Key facts
- Put the balloon on your first morning so a cancelled flight can move to the next day.
- The Red Tour covers north Cappadocia; the Green Tour covers the south with an underground city and Ihlara Valley.
- Base yourself in Göreme, Uçhisar or Ürgüp — every tour includes hotel pickup from there.
- Keep one evening for a sunset viewpoint and one for a Turkish night or whirling dervish ceremony.
Before you plan: how Cappadocia is laid out
Most visitors stay in Göreme, the village at the heart of the valleys. North of it lie Çavuşin, Paşabağ, Zelve and the pottery town of Avanos; east of it, Ürgüp and the Three Graces; west of it, the castle of Uçhisar and Pigeon Valley. The underground cities of Kaymaklı and Derinkuyu and the green Ihlara Valley are further south — about an hour or more by road.
This is why guided day tours are split into “Red” (north) and “Green” (south). Doing the south on your own is possible with a car, but the distances make a guided day much easier.
Two days in Cappadocia
Two days are enough for the classics if you start early.
- Day 1, sunrise: hot air balloon flight (or a sunrise viewpoint if you prefer the ground).
- Day 1, from 9:30: Red Tour — Göreme Open-Air Museum, Uçhisar, Pigeon Valley, Paşabağ, Avanos and Devrent Valley.
- Day 1, evening: sunset at Red Valley or Rose Valley, dinner in Göreme.
- Day 2: Green Tour — Kaymaklı or Derinkuyu underground city, a walk through Ihlara Valley, lunch in Belisırma, Selime Monastery and Pigeon Valley.
- Day 2, evening: Turkish night or whirling dervish ceremony.
Three days in Cappadocia
Three days are ideal: you see the highlights and still have time to slow down.
- Day 1: balloon at sunrise, Red Tour, sunset viewpoint.
- Day 2: Green Tour to the underground city and Ihlara Valley.
- Day 3, morning: second balloon chance if day 1 was cancelled — otherwise the Blue Tour to Mustafapaşa and Soğanlı, or a hike through Love Valley and Rose Valley.
- Day 3, afternoon: pottery workshop in Avanos or a horse ride; sunset ATV tour.
If your first balloon morning is cancelled, simply swap day 3’s morning plan — this is why three days work so well.
Four days or more
With a fourth day, add the quieter south-east: Mustafapaşa’s old Greek mansions, the rock monasteries of Keşlik and the painted churches of Soğanlı Valley. Or spend a slow day in Ürgüp’s wineries and Ortahisar’s old village, finishing with a Turkish bath.
Active travellers can also add a longer hike from Göreme to Çavuşin, a jeep safari through the valleys or a flying-dress photo shoot at sunrise.
Day tours or travelling independently?
Göreme itself, the open-air museum and the nearby valleys are easy to explore on foot. For Paşabağ, Avanos, Devrent and especially the southern sights, a guided tour saves time: transport, entrance planning, lunch and a guide who explains the history are included.
If you prefer your own pace, a private tour with a driver and guide lets you design the day — ideal for families, photographers and small groups.
Timing tips
- Balloon pickups are 60–90 minutes before sunrise — go to bed early the night before.
- Museums open around 8:00; arrive early to avoid tour groups.
- Plan hikes for the morning or late afternoon in summer.
- Sunset is the best time for Red Valley, Rose Valley and Uçhisar Castle.
- Book the Turkish night or dervish ceremony on an evening without an early start the next day.
Only one day? Here is how to make it count
If you only have one day, start with a sunrise balloon flight or a sunrise viewpoint, then join the Red Tour, which covers the Göreme Open-Air Museum, Uçhisar, Paşabağ, Avanos and Devrent Valley. Finish at the Red Valley viewpoint for sunset.
Arrive the evening before so you are rested for the early pickup, and accept that a cancelled flight cannot be moved — this is the main downside of a one-day visit.
Cappadocia with children
Cappadocia is a wonderful family destination. Children love the fairy chimneys, the underground cities and the pottery workshops, and short valley walks are easy for small legs. Balloon flights are possible from age 6.
- Choose Kaymaklı rather than Derinkuyu for younger children — the passages are less steep.
- A private tour lets you set the pace and stop for breaks.
- Camel rides, horse rides with a guide and the jeep safari are popular with kids.
- Plan a quiet afternoon at the hotel after an early balloon morning.
Saving money on your itinerary
- Visit in March, November or winter for lower hotel and balloon prices.
- Walk the valleys near Göreme yourself — they are free.
- Choose a standard balloon basket and add a sunrise ATV ride for a second view of the balloons.
- Buy the Museum Pass Türkiye if you plan to visit many sites.
Questions and answers
Is one day enough for Cappadocia?
One day lets you fly at sunrise and join the Red Tour, but you will miss the south and have no spare morning for the balloon. Two days is the realistic minimum.
Red Tour or Green Tour — which is better?
Do both if you can. The Red Tour shows the classic fairy-chimney landscape near Göreme; the Green Tour adds an underground city and the green Ihlara Valley.
Can I do the balloon and a day tour on the same day?
Yes. Balloon flights finish by mid-morning, and the Red and Green tours start around 9:30, so they fit together easily.
Where should I stay for these itineraries?
Göreme is the most central base. Uçhisar is quieter with great views, and Ürgüp has more restaurants and wineries. All tours include pickup from these towns.
