Key facts
- Flights take off around sunrise and last about 60 minutes in the air; the whole experience takes 3–4 hours with hotel pickup.
- Every morning the civil aviation authority (SHGM) decides whether balloons may fly — if they cannot, you pay nothing.
- Book your balloon for your first morning so a cancelled flight can move to the next day.
- Standard baskets carry 20–28 guests in compartments; smaller and private baskets cost more but feel very different.
- Wear warm layers and flat closed shoes — it is cold before sunrise, even in summer.
How a balloon morning works
Your day starts in the dark. A minibus collects you from your hotel about 75 minutes before sunrise and drives to the launch field, usually 10–20 minutes from Göreme. While the crew lay out the envelope and run the cold-air fans, you have a light breakfast with tea and coffee.
When the burners roar and the balloon stands upright, the pilot gives a short safety briefing and everyone climbs into the basket. Take-off is gentle — most people only notice they are airborne when the ground starts to fall away.
The flight itself lasts about an hour. The pilot rises and descends with the wind, sometimes skimming just above the valley floor, sometimes climbing high enough to see Erciyes and Hasan, the two great volcanoes that created this landscape. After landing, the crew pack the balloon while you celebrate with a toast and receive a flight certificate. You are usually back at your hotel by mid-morning.
Why flights get cancelled — and how SHGM decides
Balloons can only fly in light, steady wind and good visibility. Every morning before dawn, Türkiye’s Directorate General of Civil Aviation (SHGM) checks the weather and publishes a flag for each flight sector: green means flights may go ahead, yellow means the companies decide, red means nobody flies.
Cancellations are most common from December to March, when fog, snow and strong winds are frequent, but they can happen in any month. On average, roughly one morning in five is lost to the weather across the year.
If your flight is cancelled you pay nothing, and you can move to the next available morning or get a full refund. This is why we always recommend booking the balloon for your first morning in Cappadocia — it leaves time for a second or third try.
You can follow the live SHGM sector flags and the sunrise wind outlook on our balloon page every morning.
Standard, comfort, deluxe or private: which basket?
All companies fly the same valleys at the same time, so the real difference is how many people share your basket and how long you stay in the air.
A standard flight carries 20–28 guests in compartments around the edge, so everyone still stands at the side. It is the best value and the choice of most first-timers. Comfort baskets take 12–16 guests and usually stay up a little longer, which makes photography easier. Deluxe flights use small baskets of 8–12 and often last up to 90 minutes, with lower passes through the valleys when the wind allows.
A private flight puts only your group in the basket — ideal for proposals, honeymoons and special birthdays. It is priced per basket rather than per person.
- Standard: 20–28 guests, about 60 minutes — best value.
- Comfort: 12–16 guests, about 75 minutes — more space for photos.
- Deluxe: 8–12 guests, up to 90 minutes — the quietest shared option.
- Private: 2–4 guests, your own basket — for special occasions.
What does a balloon flight cost in 2026?
Prices change with the season. A standard shared flight typically costs between about €150 and €300 per person, with the lowest prices in winter and the highest in spring and autumn, when demand is greatest. Smaller baskets cost more, and private baskets are priced for the whole basket.
Be careful with prices that look too good to be true. A reliable price includes hotel pickup, breakfast, the flight, the landing toast, insurance and the certificate. Ask whether the company is licensed and how many passengers the basket carries — the cheapest offers often mean the largest baskets and the shortest flights.
Is it safe?
Balloon operations in Cappadocia are regulated by SHGM. Pilots are licensed, balloons are inspected, and the daily flight decision is taken centrally rather than by individual companies. Weather is the biggest risk, which is exactly why flights are cancelled when conditions are not right.
During landing, the pilot will ask you to hold the rope handles and bend your knees slightly. Landings are usually soft, sometimes directly onto the trailer. Children under 6 cannot fly, and the flight is not recommended during pregnancy or for anyone with serious back or heart problems.
What to wear and bring
Mornings are cold before sunrise in every season — often below 10 °C in spring and autumn and well below zero in winter. Once the burners are running, the basket feels warm, so dress in layers you can open.
- Warm jacket or fleece (in winter: hat, gloves and a thick coat)
- Flat, closed shoes — you may land in a field
- Phone or camera with a strap
- Sunglasses and a cap in summer (avoid loose hats)
- A little cash for the optional photo and video package and tips for the crew
Not flying? Watch the balloons from the ground
If you cannot fly — or simply prefer to stay on the ground — watching a hundred balloons rise at dawn is spectacular on its own. Popular viewpoints include the hills above Göreme, the panorama near Uçhisar and the edges of Love Valley and Rose Valley. Arrive about 30 minutes before sunrise.
Many visitors combine both: a flight on the first morning and a sunrise viewpoint, ATV ride or photo session on another day.
How to choose a balloon company
Around twenty licensed companies fly in Cappadocia, and all of them share the same airspace and the same daily SHGM decision. What differs is the size of the baskets, the length of the flight, the experience of the pilots and how the morning is organised.
Look for clear information on basket size and flight duration, a written cancellation policy, and confirmation that hotel pickup, breakfast, insurance and the landing celebration are included. Reviews that mention the pilot by name are usually a good sign. Be cautious with offers that are far below the market price — they often mean overcrowded baskets or very short flights.
- Licensed operator, insured passengers
- Basket size and flight time stated clearly
- Free cancellation if SHGM does not allow flights
- Hotel pickup and breakfast included
- A local contact you can reach on WhatsApp
Photography tips in the basket
The light changes quickly at sunrise, so start taking photos as soon as you are airborne. A wide angle captures the scale of the valleys and the other balloons; your phone’s 0.5× camera works well. Keep the burner flame out of the top of the frame to avoid overexposure, and shoot a few frames looking back at the sun for silhouettes of the balloons.
Video is lovely, but put the camera down for a few minutes too — the silence between burns is part of the experience.

April to June and September to October offer the most flying days, mild mornings and clear air. Summer is reliable but hazier; winter is beautiful but has the most cancellations.
