How to get to Cappadocia

Cappadocia has no city of the same name — it is a region in central Türkiye, and most visitors base themselves in Göreme. Here are the easiest ways to get there and to move around once you arrive.

Key facts

  • Two airports serve the region: Nevşehir Kapadokya (NAV), about 40 minutes from Göreme, and Kayseri (ASR), about 70 minutes away.
  • Flights from Istanbul take about 1 hour 15 minutes; there are daily connections from both Istanbul airports.
  • Night buses from Istanbul take 10–12 hours and arrive in Nevşehir or Göreme.
  • Book a shared or private airport transfer to your hotel — taxis are expensive over these distances.

Flying: Nevşehir (NAV) or Kayseri (ASR)?

Nevşehir Kapadokya Airport (NAV) is the closer of the two, about 40 minutes by road from Göreme. It mainly has flights from Istanbul and a few seasonal routes.

Kayseri Erkilet Airport (ASR) is about 70 minutes from Göreme but has more flights, more airlines and often lower fares, including some international connections. Both airports are easy to use, and transfer buses meet most flights.

Compare fares to both airports — the cheaper flight is often to Kayseri, and the transfer time difference is only about half an hour.

From Istanbul

The fastest option is a domestic flight from Istanbul Airport (IST) or Sabiha Gökçen (SAW) to NAV or ASR, taking about 1 hour 15 minutes. If you arrive in Türkiye on an international flight, you can often connect on the same ticket.

Overnight buses from Istanbul’s main bus stations take 10–12 hours and save a night’s hotel. Most arrive in Nevşehir, where a free shuttle or local bus continues to Göreme. Driving takes about 9–10 hours via Ankara.

From Ankara, Antalya and other cities

From Ankara, Cappadocia is about 3.5–4 hours by road, and buses run several times a day. From Antalya on the coast, it is roughly 8–9 hours by bus, or you can fly via Istanbul.

Some travellers combine Cappadocia with Konya — about 3 hours by road — to visit the Mevlana Museum on the way.

Airport transfers to Göreme, Uçhisar and Ürgüp

Shared airport shuttles are timed with flight arrivals and drop you at your hotel door; they are the best value for solo travellers and couples. A private transfer is more comfortable for families and groups and waits for you if your flight is delayed.

Taxis from the airports are available but can be expensive, especially from Kayseri. Booking a transfer in advance is usually cheaper and avoids negotiating on arrival.

Getting around Cappadocia

Göreme is small and walkable, and several valleys start at the edge of the village. Local minibuses connect Göreme with Nevşehir, Ürgüp, Avanos and Uçhisar during the day.

For the main sights, guided tours include transport and hotel pickup. Renting a car gives freedom for the quieter south-east, but roads are rural and parking in Göreme is limited. Scooters and ATVs are popular for short trips, but only on permitted tracks and with care.

  • Walking: Göreme, Open-Air Museum, Love Valley, Rose and Red Valley trails.
  • Minibus: Göreme–Nevşehir–Ürgüp–Avanos (daytime).
  • Tours: Red, Green and Blue tours with hotel pickup.
  • Private car and driver: the most flexible option for families and photographers.

Planning your first and last day

Early-morning flights to Cappadocia let you join an afternoon activity on arrival day, such as a sunset hike or ATV ride. Late arrivals are fine too — just do not schedule your balloon for the first morning if you land after midnight.

On departure day, leave enough time for the transfer: around 45 minutes to Nevşehir airport and 75 minutes to Kayseri, plus check-in time. A balloon flight on your departure morning is possible if your flight leaves in the afternoon, but remember that a cancelled balloon cannot be moved.

Combining Cappadocia with Istanbul and the coast

Many travellers combine Istanbul, Cappadocia and the Aegean or Mediterranean coast in one trip. The easiest route is Istanbul → Cappadocia by plane, then Cappadocia → Izmir, Dalaman or Antalya, usually via Istanbul. Two to three nights in Cappadocia between city and beach is a popular rhythm.

Accessibility

Cappadocia’s landscape is uneven, and many cave hotels have stairs. Ask hotels about step-free rooms before booking. Balloon flights require climbing into the basket, and underground cities have steep, narrow passages. A private tour with a driver is the most comfortable way to see the main viewpoints for travellers with limited mobility.
