Hiking the valleys of Cappadocia

The best way to feel Cappadocia is on foot. Between the villages lie quiet valleys of carved rock, hidden churches and orchards — and most trails start within walking distance of Göreme.

Key facts

  • Rose and Red Valley: the classic loop with rock churches and the best sunset viewpoint.
  • Love Valley: tall rock columns, an easy walk from Göreme.
  • Pigeon Valley: a gentle path between Göreme and Uçhisar with dovecotes carved into the rock.
  • Ihlara Valley: a 14 km green canyon in the south, usually visited on the Green Tour.

Rose Valley and Red Valley

This is the most famous hike in Cappadocia. The trail winds through soft pink and red ridges, past orchards, rock-cut churches with faded frescoes and tunnels carved between the valleys. A popular route runs from near Göreme through Rose Valley to Çavuşin, about 6–8 km in 3–4 hours.

Red Valley (Kızılçukur) is best known for its sunset viewpoint, where the cliffs glow red and orange as the sun goes down. Many visitors hike in the afternoon and finish at the viewpoint for sunset.

Download an offline map before you go — trails split often, and signposting is limited.

Love Valley

Love Valley is known for its tall, oddly shaped rock columns. It is an easy walk from the edge of Göreme or can be seen from the viewpoint above. On flying mornings, many balloons float through the valley at sunrise — one of the best places to watch from the ground.

The path along the valley floor is mostly flat; allow about 1–2 hours.

Pigeon Valley

Pigeon Valley connects Göreme and Uçhisar along a gentle path of about 4 km. The cliffs are dotted with hundreds of small dovecotes carved by villagers to collect pigeon droppings, once a valuable fertiliser for the vineyards.

Walking uphill from Göreme to Uçhisar takes about 1.5–2 hours; you can finish with the view from Uçhisar Castle and take a taxi or bus back.

Ihlara Valley

In the south of Cappadocia, Ihlara Valley is a 14 km canyon cut by the Melendiz river, with green trees, cool shade and rock churches in its walls. Most visitors walk the middle section to the village of Belisırma, where riverside restaurants serve lunch on wooden platforms over the water.

Ihlara is about 1.5 hours by road from Göreme and is part of the Green Tour, which also includes an underground city and Selime Monastery.

Which hike is right for you?

  • Easy, under 2 hours: Love Valley, short section of Pigeon Valley.
  • Moderate, half day: Rose and Red Valley loop, Göreme to Uçhisar through Pigeon Valley.
  • Green and shady: Ihlara Valley (best in summer).
  • Sunset: Red Valley viewpoint or Uçhisar Castle.
  • Guided: our sunset valley hike combines Rose and Red Valley with a local guide.

Safety and practical tips

  • Wear trail shoes with grip — the tuff is sandy and slippery on slopes.
  • Carry at least 1.5 litres of water; there are few cafés along the trails.
  • Avoid midday heat in July and August.
  • Do not climb on fragile rock formations or into closed churches.
  • Leave the valley before dark unless you are with a guide.
  • Watch for ATVs and horses on shared tracks.

More valleys worth exploring

  • Zemi Valley: a quiet, green valley between Göreme and Uçhisar with rock formations and cave dwellings.
  • Meskendir Valley: connects Göreme with the Rose and Red Valley area, with tunnels and pigeon houses.
  • Swords Valley (Kılıçlar): sharp rock spires and cave chapels, starting near the Open-Air Museum.
  • Devrent (Imagination) Valley: pink rocks shaped like animals — best seen by car or ATV.
  • Soğanlı Valley: remote, with painted churches, on the Blue Tour.

Watching the balloons from the valleys

On flying mornings, the valleys are the best places to watch the balloons from the ground. The edges of Love Valley, the hills above Göreme and the Rose Valley rim are popular. Arrive about 30 minutes before sunrise, bring a warm jacket and a torch, and stay on the paths in the dark.

Respecting the valleys

The rock formations are fragile and many churches are protected monuments. Do not climb on fairy chimneys, carve into the rock or touch the frescoes, and take your rubbish with you. Some valleys pass through private orchards and vineyards — stay on the path and leave the fruit for the farmers.
